The way prices are these days with everything, there are some simple, practical, and realistic ways you can save money for vacation. If you have a family of four or more, you will especially want to know these money saving tips. There are ways to be able to go on vacation on a reasonable budget. But first I must say, that you should never go into debt to go on a vacation. Save up! It will feel so much better when you come back and know that you don’t have to pay back with interest that meal you ate, that museum you visited, or that theme park you went to.
If you have a warehouse membership such as Sam’s, Costco, or BJ’s, you can eat lunch or dinner there. This is not the fancy meal you may have envisioned or the healthiest, but if you especially have a large family, this will save you quite a bit of money. We have eaten here for lunch before while on vacation. They usually have pizza, burgers, and/or hot dogs with a drink, plus desserts like churros or ice cream very inexpensively.
Another way to save money on meals is to cut out one meal in the day. We usually do this with breakfast especially since our sons like to sleep in. We will eat lunch, dinner and have a snack somewhere in between or in the evening. You’d be amazed how much you save on a 14 day vacation with one less meal! Now, if your hotel offers free breakfast, especially a hot breakfast not the continental kind, then eat that and have an early dinner. By the way, if they offer a continental breakfast, grab a few extra pieces of fruit and pack it with you for your snack later!
Look for a place that offers membership reciprocal benefits. If you know of a place you want to visit, see if they offer this on their website. Here’s an example. Our Florida Aquarium offers discounts or free entrance to other places you may want to go to known as the SHARE Program. Check out all the benefits!
Before we headed to the U.K., I found out that we could visit six castles on one annual family membership on the Historic Royal Palaces than it would have been to pay for each of us at each different castle! It ended up being a huge savings!
Also, if you’ve never heard, your local library may offer free museum passes to certain museums. I talk all about it here under the library section.
Another way to save is by joining the NARM Association. NARM stands for North American Reciprocal Museum association.
The NARM Association is an extensive network of hundreds of cultural institutions across Bermuda, Canada, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the United States, connecting their memberships for unprecedented access to arts, science, history, botanical gardens, and more.

One more way to save on places to go is by purchasing an annual membership pass to America the Beautiful entrance passes. If visiting as many national parks as possible is on your bucket list, then this is the way to go! You save an enormous amount of money especially if you’re a 4th grader, in the military, or a senior citizen! What a beautiful gift this would be as well to give to someone. My mother has been able to get into for free at many places using this pass!
I strongly suggest that you shop the local supermarket. They have some of the best deals even if you just need a souvenir. This is especially true if you’re staying at a place that provides a full kitchen. Buy what you would if you were at home and cook it at your resort, Airbnb, condo rental, etc. If the place you’re staying at has an outdoor grill, cook outside. Fresh air is good for the soul so cook out and/or eat out in the patio area. If the supermarket has a loyalty card, sign up even if you’re just visiting and will probably never go back. You will get the same discounts every local gets. And again, if your hotel/resort provides a free hot breakfast, take advantage of that. That’s one less meal to buy! And what I personally love to do on vacation or at home is do a Walmart grocery curbside pick up. It saves you money because you’re not entering the store and being tempted to shop outside your shopping list!
You can find community events on the Visitor’s Bureau of the city you’ll be visiting or search on Facebook. Local community events are a great way to find free or nearly free events going on. Even if you’re having a staycation, you can tap into your local visitor’s bureau. Our visitor’s bureau where we live, for instance, is Visit St. Pete/Clearwater.
You might be like “Yeah right! I barely have enough to live on.” There’s one thing I believe in and tell myself “Pay yourself like you were a bill.” This is one way we do this. Even if it’s just $50 a month that you put into this fund by the end of the year you will have $600. Yes, it may not be enough for even 1 flight internationally, but if you use it wisely you can have a lovely road trip. Food? Weren’t you going to eat anyway if you were at home? Hotel? Look for deals online. Even better, call the hotel directly. We have received better rates by calling the hotel directly (when not using our timeshare) than booking online. If you don’t ask, you will never get. Gas? Use the $600 you saved up plus whatever you would have used during those weeks of vacation. Instead of driving to work, to the store, etc. you’re driving to your destination(s).
Instead of that famous café you buy your coffee from everyday, limit it to twice a week. Shop the store ads and plan out your meals at home by using what’s on sale that week to save more money. In fact, I shop every two weeks because I plan out the meals every two weeks. I actually spend less money doing this than when I shopped every week.
I’m going to tell you exactly what I do to save up. Now, I like to save up for vacations, but of course, you can save up for whatever you need/want.
I get paid to share my thoughts, ideas, suggestions, comments, etc. to specific brands and companies on UserTesting. Sometimes it’s a 5 minute online survey and sometimes it’s a live one hour conference session. I have had success on this platform and have earned quite a bit.
Very similar to the one above, I’m also a member of User Interviews. I simply share my opinions via online (different formats) and get paid.
Shipt shopping is another way I have saved up money. I don’t do this one as often, but in reality any kind of side gig like this one can be a decent source of extra income. Some people who live in big cities have made this their sole work and earn a very good living!
Fetch Rewards is one of the smartest (FREE) apps I’ve ever used! You can take a photo of EVERY receipt you get and you will accumulate points. Those points then turn into a gift card of your choice from the many that they have listed, which I have earned many from! If you want to join, click on the link and make sure you use my referral code R4YUW and you’ll automatically get thousands of points just for joining!
Receipt Hog does the same as Fetch Rewards and I have also earned gift cards this way. Make sure to click the link and use referral code slisk33.
In the grand scheme of things, the more money you save at home equates to money you can use while on vacation. If you can get a $50 Walmart gift card by using points on apps, for instance, you can actually use that gift card later while on your vacation to cover food expenses.
Saving money for vacations doesn’t have to be out of your reach if you make it a priority. I hope you have gained some insight on these simple, practical, and realistic ways you can save money for vacation.

Since we are Hilton Grand Vacations members, we booked Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa & Marina through them. However, you don’t need to be members of any establishment in order to stay here. You can book directly from Hyatt Regency’s website. If you want the views of San Diego’s skyline, but also have the breeze that being by the water brings, then Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina is your place!
Our family was in San Diego primarily for Comic-Con. Attending Comic-Con was my oldest son’s dream and we were ecstatic that we were able to get tickets and make his dream come true and the timing couldn’t have been better. It was the same year that he was graduating from high school so this made the perfect graduation gift!
Arriving at Hyatt Regency Mission Bay
Upon our arrival, we noticed what a beautiful hotel this was. There are attendants awaiting you in case you need help with your luggage. We did not use this service because our Lyft driver helped us. The entrance was clean, adorned with welcoming flowers & plants, and the check-in process was easy. The extra touch was refreshing flavored water in the lobby and a fireplace that made us feel at home.
Surroundings of Hyatt Regency Mission Bay
When I am at a hotel, I like to check out what surrounds my stay. If you walk out of the lobby at its opposite side from the entrance, you will encounter a garden area that is manicured to perfection and makes for a restful place to just chill. It is lit at night and there are seats strategically placed around real fire pits. These are great because at night San Diego can get cool.
Kid Friendly at Hyatt Regency Mission Bay
We have two teenage boys, but this can be for anyone really. Children will love that close to the swimming pools, Hyatt Regency Mission Bay has a game area with ping pong, cornhole, and a giant connect 4. Meanwhile, you can do what we parents did. We sat by the fire while our boys played. If you so delight, you can even order drinks from the poolside bar/restaurant.
The swimming pools are all one shallow depth so it doesn’t make it suitable for swimming, but the slides make up for it. It’s a great place for younger children to pass some time and expend energy! We had great weather while we were there and I’m sure that San Diego can get warm at times during the year, so having swimming pools as an option at a hotel is wonderful.
Amenities & Activities at Hyatt Regency Mission Bay
I don’t know about you, but one of the most important things that we search for when traveling as a family is what the hotel offers aside from their onsite activities. What is offered depends greatly on whether we decide to stay or not. We were happy staying here because they have many things to offer.
While I was on my walk checking out the hotel, I came upon something I should be using more often…the workout room. What better place to have a workout room than right in front of the marina. That would motivate me for sure!
At the marina, you can rent surfboards, kayaks, paddleboards, jet skis, or take a chartered boat trip. There are seals that you can see while you’re here. We actually could hear them from our room! TIP: BRING BINOCULARS! We wish we had them because even though we could barely see them, we could have really seen them better from our balcony room and definitely from the marina with binoculars.
There really isn’t a convenient store close by to Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, but that isn’t a problem because on the marina is Market Mission Bay. Here you can get last minute necessities and purchase a quick breakfast treat…and Starbucks is here! Take your coffee & treat and eat it on the boardwalk on a beautiful day.
I couldn’t help but admire the architecture of some of the rooms at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay. I love unique and interesting architecture wherever I go. These rooms with balcony face directly onto the marina. If you’re interested in a room like this that faces the marina, make sure to request it. I’m sure they will do their best to accommodate you.
From our room at Hyatt Regency Mission Bay
We did not take photos of inside our room and that is not because there was something wrong. In fact, it’s solely because I forgot to take photos before our boys and my husband, yes I’m blaming it on them, decided to spread all our stuff all over the room and get comfortable. They really do have clean, comfortable, and beautiful rooms. You can check it out yourself on their website!
From our balcony, we could see Sea World which was exciting for our teen boys because you could see it lit up at night.
When we looked to our right, we could see the marina and on that tiny yellow dot to the right of that little island on the center of the photo lie the seals. As I mentioned before, they are loud, but that didn’t bother me. If you think it will bother you, ask for a room farthest from the marina or bring earplugs.
When we looked to our left, we could see the skyline of San Diego and the bridge that led us here. This is why I loved this hotel. It is situated in a bay that really does have the best of both worlds, the water which makes you feel like you’re next to the beach and the city because it’s convenient to get to other attractions.
After a long day of whatever you and/or your family do in San Diego, it’s great to relax on the balcony with a great tasting beverage. My choice of beverage, which I got from the poolside bar/restaurant, was a piña colada. That is my all-time favorite tropical drink!
If you ever plan on visiting San Diego, whether it’s your first time, your 50th time, or even live there and want to plan a staycation away from home, I highly recommend staying at Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina. After all, it’s where the skyline meets the water!

This ski resort is situated in on the eastern side of Ottawa in between Toronto and Montreal. It is about 1.5 hours away from the Ottawa International Airport. It is in the Greater Madawaska area of Ontario and overlooks the beautiful Calabogie Lake. The mountainside of Calabogie absolutely makes this resort top notch because it is great every season.
You don’t need to go to Calabogie Peaks Resort only during the winter months. They have many activities & amenities year round to make even the hermit crab want to come out and play. I will show you the winter activities here, but some of the other season activities include tennis, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, hiking trails, golf and more. There is no shortage of ‘what to do’ here.
Rooms
Since this is a ski resort, the rooms feel like a mixture between a lodge and a condominium. We stayed in a two story king size and sofa bed room. There are other options, but this fit our family the best. I thank God there was a fireplace in our room! It kept me warm in our -11˚F weather. If you’d like a fireplace, which I highly recommend if you’re visiting during the winter months, you need to call the resort directly and request one.
This is was our beautiful view from our back porch.
Extras
Our family had never been skiing before and it is something we wanted to try. Honestly, I thought it was way harder than I thought it would be. Putting on those ski boots was really hard and hurt my ankles after a while of skiing. However, I did not fall! I was proud of myself. The resort is awesome for skiers! I might sound like a novice here, because well, I am. It has a ski lift, a conveyor belt for you so you don’t have to ski your way up the bunny slope, and all the equipment you need to rent for your day in the snow.
Tubing!
My favorite activity was tubing. That was my thing! I might not have been good at skiing, but tubing was easy and a lot of fun!
Final Note
Whether you’re in the mood to stay inside and enjoy the comfy fireplace, go outside and enjoy the scenery, do any of the onsite activities, or just play in the snow, Calabogie Peaks Resort has it all at every season.
